It's Not Everday You Get To Save Someone's Life

Today while out and about, my friend Laurie and I had the craziest experience. We were in the drive-thru line at Sonic and I happened to look across the parking lot right as this guy in the Auto Zone parking lot collapsed. I saw his head splat on the pavement and knew he was hurt, but nobody was around or seemed to notice what had happened. Truthfully, had I not actually seen the fall, I would have assumed he was asleep on the side of the building. So I pulled out of line and drove over to him and before we even got out of the car we could see that he was seizing. So I called 911 and ran into the store to get some help while Laurie tried to talk to him. He was totally incoherent, jaws locked, foaming at the mouth and shaking. The store manager came out and helped while I was on the phone with 911 and shortly thereafter another woman who was in line at Sonic, who happened to be a nurse, came over and helped until the ambulance got there. By this time, even though he was taking raspy breaths, he had turned COMPLETELY blue. I have never seen anything like that. I had no idea the human body could turn that color. It was really horrifying. Thankfully, he started breathing a little better and by the time the ambulance arrived, he was starting to regain consciousness. The nurse who had stopped to help said she thinks he had a stroke.

I am joking about the whole heroics thing - we didn't do much. But I am convinced that if I hadn't seen him fall, he may have been out there a while and maybe too long for someone to help him. And I need to joke because my stomach has been in knots ever since. I'm still not 100% calmed down. Truth be told, I am a little disappointed that I wasn't calmer in a scary situation. I found out today, I am a border-line panicker. I was BARELY keeping it together enough to talk to the dispatcher. Shame on me - I'm going to have to work on that. Anyone want to practice emergency scenarios with me? Fake ones only please. Don't want to do that again anytime soon.

So on a lighter note, the reason we were out and about today is because for Laurie's bookclub last week, she made glitter cups for everyone. We wanted to jazz our own cups up a bit and make a couple for the girls who missed Saturday so we went to Hobby Lobby to load up on cluster crap. Needless to say, things got a little out of hand - and I had more fun working on this project than anything I've made in a while. These are the finished products.

Which Sonic cup would YOU rather be drinking from? I mean, really, do I even have to ask?

P.S. This is AJ making me say a blessing on the imaginary food at Hobby Lobby. Eat your heart out FLDS. Wearing jeans under a dress can't be as embarrassing as praying for "yummy food and strong muscles" on the floor at the craft store, right?

I am sooo glad that you saw that guy fall. Truly he might have been there a while. Panicky or not... you saw him fall and called 911 and that is exactly what he needed. ♥
Those cups are so darned adorable!
The FLDS would think that you are an abomination... short hair... and oohh, I see calves!

Wow! Now you know how I feel every time I even think about that baby I pulled out of the pool last year. UGH!

Cute cups. Can't wait... ;-)

Wow! You guys are heroes! Good job. Cute cups. My girls are totally fighting over mine, as I knew they would be. Maybe we should make some of their own.

I have been reading your blog for awhile but I have never commmentd before. I just wanted to say that I believe the Lord puts us where we are supposed to be when we are supposed to be there. I witnessed an auto accident several years ago and was the only one to stop and help a lady whose car had flipped and was laying on it's roof. I couldn't believe that she was alive and speaking. As I was screaming for someone to help, a dr. came running over and belly crawled into her car to help. To this day no one can figure out where he came from and no one witnessed him leave the scene. Hmmm! I was shook up for several days afterwards. I know there was a lesson in there for me. You did a great job!!!!!

I'll never forget that man's face as he turned from blue to purple and foaming at the mouth. While you were getting the clerk all I could think of was, "This man's going to die right in front of me!" It looked like he was taking his last breaths and he was slowing down gasping for air as the clerk was trying to figure out how to unclench his teeth to see if he was choking on his tounge.

HORRIFYING!!

Thank heaven we decided to get a drink before going to your house. Thank heaven you saw him fall and we were able to call 911.

Honestly, as grusome as it was you did a fantastic job! You pulled out your phone, got the clerk because you figured they'd have some training, and talked to the 911 operator. You totally held it together.

Me!?! Yeah. I saw AJ looking at the window and saw that as the perfect opportunity to high-tail it out of there and sing primary songs to calm us both down. I was so horrified by the situation and images that I couldn't bear to let her see it.

On a lighter note, that photoshopped picture is so fabulous! I'm going to nominate it for my contest I'm doing right now. he he.

Thanks so much for the day and the cups turned out so fantastic!!!!
