Darn!

I have been determined to not talk politics on my blog - getting plenty of that in real life. However, since someday I will look back at this blog as a journal, and the election has been a huge part of my life the last few months, I need to at least mention it. Even AJ watched the election coverage with us last night. Why is it fo funny to me when a 3-year-old says "Did Barack Obama win?" Obviously I'm concerned about the future path of this country. I am thrilled that we have come to the place where we can elect a black president - I just wish he wasn't a socialist. And that's all I'm going to say about it. I think Bob Lonsberry said it right:

Barack Obama was not my choice, but he is my president. That is true of all Americans. For the last eight years, there has been an ongoing campaign of destruction meant to handicap and hobble the last president. I refuse to be part of an effort to do the same to the next president. Those who didn't vote for Barack Obama must set a higher standard of civility and citizenship than those who didn't vote for George W. Bush. In defeat, there must still be nobility.

The last eight years have taught us what happens when you set out to destroy a presidency for political gain. You help your candidate, but you hurt your country. That pattern must not be followed with this new president. America must treat Barack Obama better than he treated George W. Bush.

So I will do my best. What's done is done and I will be as American and dignified as I can and get behind our President. And I will remember a few truths that haven't changed.

I have the right to vote - at least my voice was heard.
I have the freedom of religion - the way my family and I worship our Heavenly Father will never change.
And among other things, inside the walls of my home, I am President. (Well, Craig too) and we decide all the legislations, love and values that are taught.
America - it's a beautiful thing.

That was amazing. That is exactly how I feel. It has bothered me so much how people have treated and talked about President Bush -obviously he wasn't perfect but it has all been so mean spirited. I, too, will stand behind Obama and show him respect as our President (unless he goes totally crazy and tries to change everything of value in our country). That quote was perfect.
I wish I could have been happy about the win. It is such a historic occasion to have a black president and it does show how far our country has come with racial barriers and acceptance. I love that. I just wish it had been someone else so that I could have celebrated with all of my heart.

Thank you for this post. It was put beautifully and I needed to be reminded of this today. It's also uplifting to hear/see other people out there who share my point of view. I live in California, and sometimes it feels that there is no one around who feels the way my family does about this past election. I feel encouraged today. Thank you.
